Shame Menstruation

Maybe menstruation was never a bad thing. Maybe underlying the practices surrounding it were respect, consideration, and affection. Maybe ideas and practices were twisted over time—as ideas and practices often are. Maybe that is how menstruation came to represent what it did, and sometimes still does—impurity and shame. Maybe that is why these mistaken structures must now be dismantled. Period. ~ Mickey Kumra

Maybe menstruation was never a bad thing. Maybe menstruating women were only advised rest. Maybe they were only requested to limit social, religious, and other engagements. Maybe only to keep them from getting more drained than they already were. Maybe underlying these practices were respect, consideration, and affection. Maybe isolation, confinement, or suffocation was never an intent. Maybe these ideas and practices were twisted over time—as ideas and practices often are. Maybe that is how menstruation came to represent what it did, and sometimes still does—impurity and shame. Maybe that is why these mistaken structures must now be dismantled. Because they do not represent justice, kindness, fairness, or the truth. Period. ~ Mickey Kumra
